OMG that looks good. It's like our apple crumble. One of our favourite desserts even now is baked apple. We core out the middle, score around the waistline of the peel, then stuff the middle - hubby has dates and/or golden syrup, I have sultanas (juicier than raisins LOL) and sometimes other soft fruit. Then zap in the microwave for a minute or so until the apple starts to go to mush - but is held in check by the peel :). Easy peasy and a winter warmer indeed :).

Anyway, sorry, that's not the point of your post :). I wasn't a free school meals kid, as we call them, and not all schools have cooking facilities nowadays anyway. I remember the FSMs were usually sandwiches, triangles of barely-spread bread with a tiny flick of meat in the tip as filling! But my secondary school had a canteen and I remember the jam rolypoly pudding as the height of culinary delight. I think it was just a slab of pastry with strawberry jam on it, smothered in pale runny custard. But I used to pray we had that every day, especially instead of the baked semolina or the dried-our chocolate pudding...
